Night Raid Horror: 10 Lives Lost in Kamwenge District ADF Attack

KAMWENGE, WESTERN (UG)-At least 10 people were today morning killed following deadly attack by unknown assailants in Kamwenge district.

Police said the attack happened at around 2 am at Kyitehurizi Trading Center in Kyabandara Parish of Kamwenge Sub County located near Kibale National Park. 

Four bodies of the victims were burnt in the structure that housed a shop, a bar and a hotel, while six other victims were found guarding a maize farm and hacked to death by the assailants suspected to be Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militants, who were armed with SMG rifles, according to authorities.

Vicent Twesige, the Rwenzori West Regional Police spokesperson, has identified some of the victims as Margaret Banyenzaki, 60, and 25-year-old Tugume. Identities of the other eight victims were yet to be established by press time. Twesige added that the assailants also set ablaze a motorcycle Registration Number UFC 851T, and reportedly headed towards Kibale National Park after the attack.

Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, confirmed that an operation is underway to apprehend the assailants, and appealed to the locals to be vigilant, adding that security has been heightened in Kamwenge following the night raid.

The IS-affiliated Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels are accused of having massacred thousands of civilians in DR Congo in recent years and of carrying out jihadist attacks on Ugandan soil.
