Tragic Road Crash Claims Life of German Tourist in Kabale District

KABALE –A German national has today perished in a road crash while two others were seriously injured in Kabalaga hill in Kyanamira Sub-County of Kabale district along the Kabale-Mbarara highway.

The deceased is Dr Wendsche Ralf Steffen, 58, a German tourist while the injured are 48-year-old female German tourist Silk Venus and Morgan Nyombi, 60, a resident of Murungu in Munyonyo, Kampala, a driver attached to Kibo Slopes Uganda Limited.

ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesman, told our reporter today afternoon that the accident happened in the morning at around 9 am when a green Toyota Land Cruiser Registration Number UAX 567C in which the tourists were travelling from Bwindi to Kampala, collided head-on with a speeding Fuso lorry (UBH 009B).

The lorry which was coming from the opposite direction tried to overtake another vehicle and, in the process, collided with the tourist vehicle killing one tourist on the spot and injuring another plus their driver.

Maate attributed the accident to reckless driving by the lorry driver, adding that the injured were rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment while the body of the deceased has been conveyed to the same facility’s mortuary for postmortem.

Tragic Fire Engulfs City House in Kampala, Claiming One Life

KAMPALA, (UG)-Police say they have launched investigations into the cause of a fire that gutted City House in Kampala today morning, killing one person.

The tragic fire incident occurred at approximately 9 am and led to the loss of property worth millions in the building that is also home to the oldest political party in Uganda, the Democratic Party (DP), as well as paralyzing nearby businesses and operations.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, told our reporter today afternoon that the fire was successfully extinguished, and an investigation has been initiated to determine the precise cause of the fire, adding that the findings of this investigation will be communicated promptly to the public.

Owoyesigyire further noted that concerns remain about the possibility of additional casualties within the remnants of the building, which detectives at Central Police Station Kampala are actively working on, to verify if there are other bodies still trapped inside. Owoyesigyire also stated that the building itself is not safe for occupancy and will be closed until further notice.

The deceased, whose body has been conveyed to the City Mortuary at Mulago for autopsy, was yet to be identified by press time, with unconfirmed reports indicating that a charcoal stove could have been the cause of the inferno.

Four Dead in Apac as A Canoes Journey Ends in A Disaster

APAC,(UG)-Four people have been confirmed dead while three others survived when a canoe in which they were traveling in Apac district capsized.

The deceased who were crossing from Arocha swamp to the Ibuje Sub-County have been identified as one-year-old Emmanuel Ongora, Jackline Acio, 8, Asante Odongo, 12, and Patrick Ebong, 24.

The Apac Resident District Commissioner, George Abudul, in a statement last evening also identified the survivors as Winnie Anyango, 22, Isaac Oula, 3, and Walter Ogwal – the canoe operator.

According to Abudul, the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, at about 5pm while the victims were traveling from Alworoceng village to Amii-Amilo parish in Ibuje, adding that the group opted to use a canoe because the road connecting the two villages was flooded.

Abudul stated that all the four bodies were retrieved by the community members and handed over to the relatives for decent burial.He urged all road users to carefully plan their routes while avoiding heavily flooded and cut-off roads which might lead to accidents and fatalities.

Tragic Collision on Ntungamo-Mbarara Highway Claims Three Lives

NTUNGAMO,(UG)-Three people were yesterday afternoon killed in an accident along the Ntungamo-Mbarara Highway.

The crash according to eyewitnesses happened involved a Toyota Subaru Forester Registration Number UBN 375Q and a Toyota Hiace Taxi (drone) Registration Number UBP 314A.

Preliminary information indicates that the Toyota Hiace which was destined for Mbarara from Rukungiri collided head on with the Subaru from the opposite direction killing three people, two occupants of the Subaru who died on the spot and the taxi driver Mujurizi Herbert alias Rough who breathed his last as he was being transported to Itojo for medical attention.

The taxi driver and passengers of the taxi sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Itojo Hospital for treatment.By press time, Police was yet to issue a statement about the fatal crash, and the identities of the deceased were not known.

The crash comes barely four weeks to the close of 2023 which has seen a sharp increase in road carnage in the country, claiming 14 Ugandans on average daily.

A 36 Years Old Man Dies in Rukungiri Fatal Road Accident

RUKUNGIRI –Police in Rukungiri District have launched investigations into a fatal road accident that claimed a 36-year-old pedestrian.

According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, Aggrey Kwesiga, 36, a resident of Nyarushanje Sub County in Rukungiri District was killed today morning by an Isuzu Bus belonging to Star Link Bus Company (UBF 966J) at Kebisoni Trading Centre along the Rukungiri-Ntungamo Road.

Maate revealed that the bus driven by Yusuf Muhozi, 49, which was enroute to Kampala knocked the deceased as it tried to stop at the trading centre to pick up passengers.

Maate told our reporter in the afternoon that the deceased, along with his mentally-ill brother was run over by the bus.He was rushed to Kebisoni Health Centre III but succumbed to injuries upon arrival at the health facility.

Maate adds that the incident has been registered at Rukungiri Central Police Station under Reference Number TAR 106/2023 with investigations underway.

Primary School Pupil Dies in Rukungiri Accident

RUKUNGIRI: Police in Rukungiri are investigating circumstances under which a 9-year-old Maria Owomuhendo, a pupil at St Andrews Primary School, lost her life in a fatal accident.

The incident occurred at Omukashanda village, Ruyonza parish, Nyarushanje sub-county in Rukungiri district.

Maria, a resident of Omukishanda village, was being transported home with two other pupils on a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration number UEB 887J.

On their journey, the motorcycle attempted to overtake a Fuso Fighter (tipper) with registration number UBJ 619J.

Unfortunately, a collision transpired with another motorcycle coming from the opposite direction, leading to Maria’s immediate demise as she fell off the motorcycle.

ASP Wasswa Joshua, a 34-year-old police officer from Rubabo Police station and a resident of Rubabo Police Barracks in Nyarushanje sub-county, reported the incident via telephone to the police station.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, conveyed that officers from Rubabo police station visited the crime scene.

The body of the deceased was subsequently transported to Kisiizi hospital for postmortem.

Maate further noted that both involved vehicles were impounded at Rubabo police station pending inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV).

The suspects, however, remain at large, and ongoing efforts are in place to apprehend them.

Fatal Pedestrian Collision Sparks Manhunt for Priest in Kisoro

KISORO: Police in Kisoro district are searching for Reverend Sam Nziita (58), a Mufumbira tribesman residing in Kibande village, Busamba ward, Southern division in Kisoro municipality.

He is wanted in connection with a fatal incident where he allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian.

The victim, identified as Mbabazi Stephen (55), also a Mufumbira resident of Nyaruhengyere village, Busamba ward, Southern division in Kisoro municipality, lost his life in the accident that occurred on Monday, 09.10.2023, around 9:20 PM.

According to reports, the incident involved a silver Toyota Prado with registration number UAW030C, traveling from Kisoro town towards Kabale.

The driver reportedly collided with road humps near Kyamps petrol station, lost control at high speed, and fatally struck the pedestrian walking along the road.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, mentioned that the scene was examined by Asp Kushaba Micheal DTO Kisoro, with assistance from PC Erima Abubackar.

The deceased’s body was transported to Kisoro hospital mortuary for postmortem, and the vehicle was towed to Kisoro Central Police Station awaiting inspection by IOV.

Maate attributed the accident to reckless driving and emphasized that inquiries are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing driver.
